Focus and Fear of Success – The Biggest Monkey on Your Back?

Note: Another from the archives around 2003-2005. They are few and far between, but some pieces stood the test of time.

fear of success

If you have been on the internet for awhile, you know that there are millions of people trying anything and everything to get your attention. They want in your wallet. It’s a great big money grab out there folks, and the net has become the biggest marketing arena on the planet, driving whole industries and generating Billions of dollars in sales.

So what’s the problem? Well, none if you are one of the relative few with focus. A whole lot of problems if you lack focus.

There are myriad small business opportunities on the net today.

And if you do your research and find something you want to associate with, or you create a product for a well-researched target market, you are well on your way to financial success. Or are you?

You see the more you become active on the net as either someone looking for the right opportunity, or as someone who has found the right opportunity already, the more you are bombarded with choices. Everyday you get emails saying that the next best thing since sliced bread has come along.

The new “thing” demands your attention and you get nervous that you might be missing out on another opportunity for financial success.

But don’t you already have a Thing? At least, haven’t you been presented with several great opportunities in the last week? So why on earth take a serious look at yet another? Why fragment the time you need to spend on your current business with all the marketing it takes to get yet another off the ground and profitable?

What I am talking about here is something I call “Sign-up-Itis.” (Not to be confused with Sinusitis, which can be just as debilitating.)

It goes like this: You find your focus, you are fired up. All is good and you are ready to start working on the hundreds of little things you need to do to get traffic and make sales. You need to get good search engine positioning, you need a links campaign, you have to research ezines in your niche and place ads, you need to set up joint ventures, you need to create and update content on your site, set up a merchant account, a delivery system, and the list goes on from there.

Then you get an email from a friend or associate telling you that you HAVE to check out the latest and greatest. You do. It’s an awesome opportunity. You look at your plate and it’s already full with your current project, but the plate has a lot of things on it you really don’t enjoy doing. It’s a lot of work to make any business pay off, as you can see from the short list above.

It’s Much More Fun To Think About Success Than It Is To Do The Work It Takes To Achieve It

But this NEW thing is exciting, fresh, shiny. It draws you in and it’s MUCH more fun to think about success than it is to do the work it takes to achieve it, so you buy in. You get a ton of tools to start this new venture. It’s all overwhelming, especially since you have gone back to your first venture and realized you now have TWO great things that can both make you money, but they BOTH need your attention on a grand scale in order to see profit.

Now, here is the part where most people give up.

They say to themselves “Internet marketing is nothing more than a series of steps that I cannot complete. I am always excited when I get started on something, but when it comes down to DOING what I start, it gets hard and doesn’t happen as fast as I would like it to.”

Let me make one thing clear right now: It is not the net’s fault for not providing us with real opportunity.

Opportunity abounds and is right there for us to snatch up and achieve success.

Never let yourself fall into the trap of reasoning your way out of success. “It’s not for me.” “I can’t do this – it’s for people much better with computers and internet marketing than me.”

The problem lies with your focus and your fear of success.

You must CHOOSE the opportunity you are passionate about, or create a product you stand behind and love, and then hunker down for the long-haul! Make yourself do everything you are taught to do to build your business and build it – all the way or not at all.

It should be no surprise the next time you get an email with the next best thing inside. You should say to yourself “That’s great! Another opportunity for someone has just been born! But I am busy with MY business and cannot take on another venture at this time.”

We Do It On Purpose

Lack of focus is sometimes a purposeful self-defeating tactic your subconscious uses to keep you from success. Success is NOT a destination. It’s a journey.

And that journey scares the hell out of 99% of normal, everyday people. So be it. It IS scary to think of radical life changes, even if they are for what you consider to be far better than your current situation!

But don’t let a lack of focus and your fear of success tear you away from your dreams.

USE your fear and confront it, right now. Today.

Make hard decisions and stick to them, then begin the process of working on a focused, tight marketing campaign to make whatever venture you choose the venture that sets you free.

Wear electronic blinders. Keep lean and mean and only take on new responsibilities that will be good for your CURRENT business. Throw the rest in the trash.

We all know there are tons of opportunities out there.

That is a fact. It’s time now to get the stars out of your eyes, choose your niche, your product, your affiliate program or your MLM, and get to work. Make a vow not to stop until you are where you want to be financially.

The question is not “Can you really succeed online?” This has been proven time and again over the years by thousands of people, many of whom you read about all the time.

The question is “Do you really want to be one of those people, or are you stuck in a cycle of constantly sabotaging your success with a lack of focus?”

The cure for Sign-up-itis is focus and hard work. Success is something you decide to achieve one day. It’s that decision that is often the biggest hurdle any future success story has to conquer.

Give up before it’s too late!

Maybe you should just give up. Give up trying to fit into the system you were taught was the only way to grow up, make a living, retire, and die. At some point you have to realize that you are being played by the game. Inside of which you only have the illusion of choice.

These thoughts are where entrepreneurship is born. We actually live in a world with many thousands of possibilities for pursuing happiness, financial independence, and freedom to live by our own set of rules outside of a system of rules we didn’t create.

No matter where you were born (or when), you were given instructions from the moment you could understand language. Like how to act.  (Isn’t that funny? Read it again. How to “ACT”)

If you’re tired of acting and you want to really BE who you are, on your own terms, then maybe you should give up trying to fit in. What’s it gotten you thus far? Jobs you’ve disliked. Around people you had nothing in common with. Doing things you’d never choose to do if you had the power to choose.

I love doing my own little part in shaking the tree and freeing people from the idea that what they were taught was the truth. It seems absurd when you think about it, that someone told you what your religion was before you even had a chance to really know what religion was. You were told your religion was right and just and the only way. The one true belief system above all others.

Funny that every kid from every religious background was told the same thing. Except none of that is real. Never was. Because you were born into the family your were, you inherited all kinds of cultural stuff you never got the chance to assess for yourself. Some of this is unavoidable. A Catholic family only knows how to do Catholic stuff. A blue collar family can only teach you the ways of the factory worker and the union.

After a certain point, though, you gain enough education (hopefully) to begin questioning things about your life and what you believe outside of what you been told. It’s at this point a person either choses to cut their own trail in life or, like most people, they decide to believe everything they’d been told about “who they are,” jumping headlong into the populist version of the Game of Life.

School – Work – Retire – Die?

Nothing explains the absurdity of conventional modern life better than a 50+ year-old talk by Alan Watts. Get viscerally in touch with the ridiculousness of modern culture by listening to what Alan had to say about it all those years ago. Then try to forget when he recorded this. It’s easy to imagine that this was something someone said only yesterday.

People who grok this make the very best entrepreneurs. Seriously. Nothing is a better breeding ground for getting real  about this one life that you have than realizing there is a box to think outside of in the first place.

For much of your life you were like a fish…

…there was the Ocean, and nothing else. Water was the only thing you could possibly exist in, and there was no such thing as being “under water.” Because there was nothing else in your Universe but water. How can you be under something that is everything?

Then you floated up and broke the plane between water and sky to see where that light was coming from, and your entire Universe changed in an instant. Everything you thought you knew about life and how to live it suddenly became incredibly insignificant. The catharsis this realization creates is enough to jog just about anyone out of the trance we are put in from the day we’re born.

From this day forward, because you can’t put Pandora back in the box, you think differently about everything. Including how you live, how you make money, and how you move about this planet among the vast ocean of people still in a trance.

I say that there is nothing that could possibly breed a person better suited to entrepreneurial thought and action. Because when you break free of the trance, you have to look at everything you think and everything you do in that new light. And you know things in your life must change. In fact, they already have.

Beyond this point, you know that no change is too scary or too big in a Universe where you, for the first time, understand your power comes from the limitless and infinite power of that which you are wholly a part.

How do you stop someone who wields this kind of power? You don’t. You can’t.

So as we move forward, it is from this foundation of understanding that I speak to you. Now you know where I’m coming from, even if I’m just helping you to understand how search engines work so you can get more visitors.

I’m rooting for you because I know that ultimately I’m rooting for me. To “root” is to dig down to the source of life and tap into it for sustenance in order to thrive.

And so, I will do everything in my power to help you thrive because you are me and I am you. And off we go together into that vast frontier of the discoveries that lie before us.

Now, let’s rock this!

Music to Get Some Work Done

Need a little motivation?  DANGER:  You might not be able to work to this.  Rather, you might find yourself, like me, wondering how long it might take to learn how to play guitar, sing, and play Didgeridoo at the same time while watching the whole video straight through about 10x.

How To Dream BIG!

How “Big” can you think? How wild can your dreams of success get?

Do you keep yourself in check and only allow yourself to dream what you’ve been told is possible? Most people do. That’s why most people marvel at the accomplishments of people who truly Think Big.

Stopping yourself from opening up to what’s possible is illogical.

Remember the last significant breakthrough you had?  Maybe it was breaking a profit barrier in your business.  Something you always TOLD yourself you were determined to do, but when it happened, you still were like “Whoa, did I just do that?”

It doesn’t have to be about business, and it didn’t have to happen in the last several years.

  • It also happened when you realized your dad was no longer holding onto the back of the bike.
  • It happened when you graduated.
  • It happened when you drove a car by yourself for the first time.
  • It happened when she said “Yes.”
  • And it happened when he kissed you for the first time.

There’s really no difference between different life accomplishments when you’re talking about the wow factor that follows a big, breakthrough event.

Once you knew how to do it, through experience, you never stressed about it again.  You just knew that you knew, and that knowing built confidence and muscle memory.  And from there you were on to bigger and better things.  In fact, you’ve been expanding since the moment you first opened your eyes.

At some point, though, someone introduced doubt…

This happens to all of us in life.  Someone or some experience made us think there was a limit to things.  A tiny dark dot of doubt entered into our thoughts and, depending on how much we fed it, it began to grow and cast its shadow upon every aspect of our lives.

dark dot of doubt

Our decisions began to be affected by it.  We stopped taking chances because of the power we gave the growing doubt dot.  We talked ourselves out of “The Big Thing” with Doubt’s help.

dark dot of doubt

If you truly believe that you were meant to expand from day one of Life on Earth, what do you think made parts of your life stop expanding?

For example, you may have gotten the girl and you may have a great family, but money issues continually haunt you.  Or you might have accomplished some pretty big life goals in one area, but others simply never seem to take off and expand the way you expected they would.

It’s because you stopped expecting.  You thought you were cool with the idea of wealth, but deep down you had stopped totally believing-beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt in Wealth.

Is it logical to think that you are only worth a certain amount of income?  Or a certain amount of love?

Is it logical to think that you only deserve to accomplish a certain level of success in life and business, but that only others deserve more?

In no part of this Universe are those beliefs logical.

We all know that life is about expansion and growth.  Others before you have proven just how big life can be.  And its not because they have a skill that you don’t.  It’s because they took that little dark dot of doubt and squashed it under their heel.  They destroyed their doubt and consequently, they destroyed their limiting beliefs.

[shock_spots id=”43882″]

And when they did this, there was no limit to their personal or business success whatsoever.  This is the stuff that millionaires and billionaires are made of.

Once one person broke free of the idea that humans could not break the 4 minute mile barrier, it happened.  And after that, people broke the barrier all the time, starting the moment the barrier became permeable.

Kids Can Show You The Way…

Kids are closer to the source of limitlessness.  They were just there, before they came here.  Its fresh and automatic to us when we’re young.  But as the world performs its magic Trick of Limits on u, we tend to wear down over time and give in to the mythology of limitations.

Whatever you think your wealth number is, its just a thought.  Its completely random, limited, and self-inflicted.  Whatever you think you deserve in a companion is just a choice you made based on your self worth.  Its not fate.

So how big can you dream?

Why not charge $10,000 instead of $1000 for what you do for clients?  Or $100,000 instead of $10,000?  People are doing it all the time.  You’re the only one telling yourself that you can’t do it.  Even if others placed that limiting idea in your head, you’re the one carrying on with the argument…supporting it by believing in it.

Life is but a dream.  And you can change the dream to anything you want it to be.

You are in control, at all times, over how much Muchness is in your life.  Other people only have the power to control what shows up in your life if you give them control.  They cannot take it from you by force.

You have to willingly hand someone else the power over your life to dictate how much you make, when and where you travel and how you experience life, who you marry, and what you accomplish.

The good news is that you can revoke that power at whatever moment you choose to do so.  You can take back your childlike ability to dream, to Think Big.  Like, really big!

The power is yours.  It always has been.  Take it back.

The Importance of June 24th – Find Your Greatness

goal setting meeting your goals

Today, June 24th is an important benchmark as just seven days from now the year will be 50% complete.

That’s right, two quarters down, and the third one about to tee up.

I can assure you that all Sales Managers, Stock Analysts and Fortune 500 Executives are well aware of this date and doing what they can to finish the 2nd quarter strong.

Are you?

In my opinion, this last week of June is of supreme importance as once July 1st arrives, YOU will find out if your current strategies and year to date performance makes you look like a champ or a chump. (I suspect you already know.)

Consider the following…

If you had ambitions of making $250,000 this year, you should be closing in on $125,000.

If you had a resolution of paying off $20,000 in debt, you should be $10,000 lighter by now.

And if you said you were going to lose 40 pounds, you should have dropped 20 by now and be wearing baggy pants.

Are you on track with any of your goals?

Have you surpassed your expectations?

Are you even close?

IF you have not made as much progress as you’d like in the first half of the year, and need a serious PICK ME UP, I’d like to share with you an exceptional MANIFESTO and video series that will get your mojo working in overdrive.

The video series alone is outstanding, but please be sure to read the Manifesto as soon as you can — it’s that good!
