How Ignoring SEO Actually Got Me Better Search Engine Rankings!

It all started when I read Google's Terms of Service years ago. In short, they said some outlandish things in the TOS. The most outlandish was that I should just focus on my visitors, and Google would take care of ranking my site.

"Yeah, right!" I thought. At the time there was a major arms race between Google and SEO junkies like me. We were working our butts off trying to fool Google into ranking our sites, and Google was working just as hard (with Billions in the bank to hire the greatest engineers the world has to offer) to keep our lousy sites out of their results.

Needless to say, no one wins against a juggernaught that pulls down $2-$3 billion per quarter. That was then. The latest quarterly earnings statement from Google was over $9 billion.

Faced with those odds, I went back to what I found in Google's TOS and decided to give it a try. I would start a blog and actually provide great material, that I formerly would have charged for, and call Google's bluff.

When I started focusing on the needs of my audience, a lot more changed than just my rankings. Sure, the experiment worked and I got ranked for more keywords than all of my marketing friends put together. (Today my blog and podcast site, The Friday Traffic Report, gets traffic from over 10,000 keywords per month.) But the really great thing was my business was growing in many ways outside of getting search traffic. I was listening to my audience and interacting with them more than I ever had before.

Then Twitter and Facebook started the social explosion, which plugged all of us into our markets, and things went nuts. My web-bending days started back then, when I was laughing at Google's TOS statements to just "trust them," turn my focus toward my readers, and they'd take care of ranking my sites.

Little did I know that years later I'd be exposing what I've learned in this guide and I'd owe Google and some web-benders before me a deep debt of gratitude. (But it's not all about search engines, mind you!)

If anyone is brave enough to show you their live stats for one of their sites, they usually hope you don't catch how high their bounce rate is. Most sites are lucky to keep their bounce rates below 60%. Note mine is just under 11%.

If you've never seen a bounce rate that low before, take note. It is a key indicator that I'm doing something far different than other experts are doing!
